Overview
1. Location and Accessibility
- Located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, the Valley of Flowers lies at an altitude between 3,300 and 3,600 meters (10,800 to 11,800 feet).
- The closest town is Joshimath, and from there, visitors travel to Govindghat, which is the starting point of the trek. From Govindghat, it’s a 10-km trek to the village of Ghangaria. The valley itself is a 3-4 km trek from Ghangaria.
2. Best Time to Visit
- The valley is accessible only during the summer months, from June to October. The peak blooming season is July and August, when the valley comes alive with over 500 species of wildflowers.
- In early June, the valley features snow and lush greenery, while the monsoon months (July and August) reveal a vivid carpet of flowers.

- Route: Rishikesh/Haridwar to Govindghat.
- Travel Time: Approximately 10–12 hours by road.
- Highlights: Enjoy the scenic drive through the mountains, passing through towns like Rudraprayag and Joshimath.
- Stay: Check into a hotel or guesthouse in Govindghat.
- Distance: 13 km trek (or you can opt for a mule or helicopter).
- Time: Approximately 6–7 hours of trekking.
- Route Details: The trek is well-paved, offering lush forest views and the river running alongside for much of the way.
- Stay: Arrive in Ghangaria by evening and check into a hotel or guesthouse. Rest well, as the next day will involve more trekking.
- Distance: 3.5 km one-way trek from Ghangaria to the Valley of Flowers.
- Time: 6–8 hours round-trip, including time spent in the valley.
- Highlights: Trek through breathtaking landscapes with diverse flora, streams, and waterfalls. Spend time in the valley, enjoying the variety of wildflowers, and return to Ghangaria before nightfall.
- Stay: Overnight in Ghangaria.
- Distance: 6 km one-way trek to Hemkund Sahib.
- Time: Around 8–10 hours round-trip.
- Highlights: Visit Hemkund Sahib, a famous Sikh pilgrimage site at an altitude of 4,329 meters, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and a serene lake. The trek is steep, but the view and serene atmosphere are rewarding.
- Stay: Return to Ghangaria for the night.
- Route: Trek back to Govindghat (13 km).
- Travel Time: Approximately 5–6 hours.
- Highlights: Take a relaxed pace on the descent and enjoy the landscapes.
- Departure: From Govindghat, head towards your next destination, like Joshimath or Haridwar.
If time allows, take a detour to visit Badrinath, one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites. It’s about 25 km from Govindghat and worth the visit for its stunning temple and hot springs.
